GOOD WIN FOR BERKO
BERKHAMSTED 4 SOUTHEND MANOR 1
Berkhamsted got revenge over the side that knocked them out of the FA Vase last season, with a comprehensive win in Saturday’s friendly. Mick Vipond’s side built on the good showing in midweek against Wingate & Finchley. Connor Calcutt opened the scoring with a header past Priddle from a Frankie Jowle cross mid-way through the first half. He netted again with a low shot beyond the keeper inside the far post to double the lead in the 35th minute.
Whislt Berko were dominant, Manor pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when Luke Sands tapped in from close range. However, Berko produced two more fabulous goals to make sure of the win. Calcutt turned provider when after a neat passing build up, he crossed from the right and Adam Mead shuffled feet and volleyed past the keeper. In the 77th minute Frankie Jowle received the ball and from outside the penalty area, placed a perfect shot in the top corner past Priddle, that was just inches inside both the post and the bar. That put Berko 4-1 up.
It was a good all round performance, with the defence rarely troubled and the Comrades controlled the midfield as well as scoring some fine goals to boost confidence throughout the side. It is the first time in four attempts that the new Berko club have beaten an Essex Senior League side.
Manor had the consolation of winning the battle of the reserve sides at Broadwater, 1-0 before the above game.
Tasker; Griggs, Rodrigoe, Chamberlain, Gavin, Hawes, Frederick, Mead, Calcutt, Jowle, Towell. Substitutes Morrissey, Thompson. Hardy,Coultas, Canham.
On Saturday Berko have a home quarter final of the Herts Charity Shield when they entertain promoted Hoddesdon Town at Broadwater ko3pm. They are at home to Chipperfield Corinthians in a friendly on Tuesday 6th-the last chance to see the side before the league season kicks off.

GOOD PERFORMANCE
BERKHAMSTED 1 WINGATE & FINCHLEY 2
Berko gave Ryman Premier side Wingate & Finchley a good run for their money in the friendly on Tuesday night. The Comrades opened the scoring through Josh Chamberlain in the 20th minute, when he got on the end of a cross and netted with a shot past Bobby Smith in the visitor’s goal. Five minutes later Berko might have doubled their lead when Smith was beaten again by James Towell shot but the ball rebounded to safety after hitting the post. Berko played good passing football particularly in the first half with Connor Calcutt missing a golden chance to score with most of the goal to aim at. The visitors are from two divisions higher than Berko and fought back into the game with a well worked goal that was finished off by Leon Smith. Just before the interval Smith got the winning goal with a bicycle kick with his back to goal, to net his second of the match.
There were no goals in the second half which was surprising considering the number of substitutions made but both teams kept their shape. Calcutt and Ashley Morrissey, who had come on for the injured Chamberlain went closest for Berko.
Tasker; Griggs, Rodrigoe,Hardy, Gavin, Hawes, Chamberlain, Frederick, Calcutt, Towell,Jowle. Substitutes Broome , Canham, Sears, Morrissey and Thompson.
Home supporters get value for money on Saturday when Berko have a double header of friendlies with Southend Manor at Broadwater. The reserve match kicks off at 1:45pm and the first team follow up at 4pm. On Tuesday 30th Berko’s first team take on Tring Corinthians at Broadwater.
FOOTBALL BACK AT BROADWATER
BERKHAMSTED 0 GREAT WAKERING ROVERS 3
Berko went down in their opening pre-season match on Saturday, after being punished for a few defensive mistakes by Rovers from the Essex Senior League. With Lewis Rodrigoe, Bekim Culaj and Dale Sears all unavailable, Mick Vipond gave three newcomers a chance in defence. Young Jake Broome from Leverstock Green and Tom Hardy played at full back with tall Ed Canham coming in at centre half.
The first half was very even with the sides separated by just a Billy Johnson goal, after a careless pass at the canal end was intercepted and he ran on to score. Berko spurned the chance to equalise in the second half when Josh Chamberlain was hauled down in the penalty area. However, a brilliant save from the visiting keeper kept out Connor Calcutt’s spot kick.
Johnson doubled the lead when he was released by some slick passing. The visitors also hit the post with a fierce shot from the right wing. Player manager Dan Trenkel beat the offside trap and rounded off the scoring when the defence was caught square. Canham headed over from substitute Adam Mead’s corner. Ashley Morrissey fired in some good shots for Berko, with one drive just clearing the bar and the keeper was in fine form to stop his next two efforts. The return of Steve Hawes from AFC Dunstable was another plus for the Comrades.
Tasker; Broome(Thompson), Hardy(Mead), Canham, Gavin, Hawes, Chamberlain (Morrissey), Frederick, Calcutt, Griggs, Jowle(Towell).
Berko also sent a side to Tring Corinthians on Saturday and came away with a 3-2 win from their friendly. Jordan Aikman and Ben Humphrey (last year’s reserve player of the year) scored for Berko before teenager Jay Caines shot the winner from 30 yards.
On Tuesday night Berko are at home to Ryman Premier division side Wingate & Finchley.
FA DRAWS RELEASED
Berko got home draws in the FA’s three cups this week.
FA Cup
The FA Cup gets underway on Saturday 17 August when Berkhamsted will entertain fellow Spartan South Midlands Premier division side AFC Dunstable, who finished 5 points above Berko last season. Success would mean another home game on Saturday 31st August against the winners of the tie between Premier rivals Harefield United or Woodford United (who were relegated from the Evo-Stik Central to the United Counties League after getting no points in the whole of last season). The second qualifying round is on Saturday 14th September when Berko could be going to Daventry (from the division above) or fellow SSMFL Premier sides Hillingdon Borough or Leverstock Green.
FA Vase
On Saturday 7 September Berko are at home to fellow Premier division side Hertford Town. Success would bring another home tie on Saturday 21 September against Buckingham Town.
FA Youth Cup
Berko got a bye through to the 1st qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup, where they host Ashford Town (Middlesex) in the week commencing the 23rd September.
