TWO BIG AWAY WINS FOR BERKO

HATFIELD TOWN 1 BERKHAMSTED 4

Berko confirmed their return to form by hitting four goals away from home for the second time in a week. Mick Vipond was missing his regular first and reserve team goal keepers so he gave a first appearance of the season to Ben Clarke. On Saturday they were too good for relegation threatened Hatfield and took the lead after just 12 seconds. From the kick off, the ball went back to Jordon Frederick and he played  it forward for the speedy Myles Stephenson to nod past the keeper. Frankie Jowle doubled the lead before half time as he broke clear and chipped over the goalie’s head.

Hatfield then pulled a goal back but their hopes of a recovery were dashed as Berko scored two more. Josh Chamberlain and Glenn Thompson added the extra goals in the second half, just as they did last week at Leverstock Green. Chamberlain had hit the post a few times earlier in the game but finally scored when he struck a superb volley from a cross by Ashley Fongho. Thompson nodded over the keeper from another right wing cross to complete the scoring.

Berko’s reserves went down 5-0 at home to Bedfont Sports on Saturday. The final scoreline flattered the visitors who were only one goal up at half time.

On Wednesday night Berko’s under 18s progressed to the quarter final of the Colwyn Cup. They let in two early goals at home to Leighton Town. However, they got back to level matters at the interval, thanks to a fine free kick from Connor Toomey and a second by Ashley Morrissey. Tommy Twelves put Berko ahead and Leighton had a goal disallowed for offside and nearly equalised. However, Mitchell Cole booked the place in the next round with a calm finish to make it 4-2.

On Saturday Berkhamsted have their penultimate home Spartan South Midlands league game of the season when they entertain Hertford Town, who are just above the relegation zone. Mick Vipond has the decision to make on whether to change a winning team and recall the available again Carl Tasker, Dan Griggs, James Towell and Lewis Pritchard. Connor Calcutt remains injured and it is the last game of Dale Sears ban. Kick off  at Broadwater is3pm.

Berko’s reserve side finish their away games in the Suburban North with trips to Ashford on Wednesday 10th and Newport Pagnell Town on Saturday.

LEVERSTOCK GREEN 0 BERKHAMSTED 4

On Tuesday night Berko ended their recent poor run with their biggest away win of the season with a fine second half performance at Pancake Lane. With Mick Vipond able to bring back Frankie Jowle, Lewis Pritchard and Josh Chamberlain, who all missed the Hanwell game, Berko were a much stronger side. Pritchard nearly marked his comeback with a goal, but his lob went just the wrong side of the post. Soon after Frankie Jowle beat the offside trap and with just the keeper to beat fluffed his chance with a weak shot that Tom Colulton saved with an outstretched leg. Apart from the odd run by Tobi Akin and thoughtful pass from Jamie Davidge, Green posed little threat to the Berko defence.

The first half was goalless, but there was no doubt what the result would be once Berko got their noses in front. Two goals in two minutes around the hour mark won the game. Coulton did well to beat out a powerful shot from Josh Chamberlain but Glenn Thompson was on hand to tap in the loose ball at the back post. Chamberlain was brought down for a penalty soon after and took it himself, getting the ball stuck in the stanchion as his clean hit spot kick gave Coulton no chance.

Mick Vipond brought on substitutes James Towell and Myles Stephenson and both scored. Stephenson’s first touch was to bring the ball under control and he turned and hit a fine shot to make it 3-0. Chamberlain hit the post as Berko’s confidence came flooding back. A horrendous defensive mix up from Green presented the ball to Towell and he netted his first senior goal, by calmly shooting past Coulton to make the final score 4-0.
