The boggy pitch passed a morning inspection but Berko threw away a two goal half time lead at Colney Heath on Saturday and lost for the first time in 10 games but really deserved at least a point from this game. They made a good start with Frankie Jowle opening the scoring for Berko with his first goal of 2013 when he cut in from the right wing and fired past the keeper. Centre back Paul Branson doubled the lead with a header for his first goal since joining the club.

The home side hit a sensational four goals in a 10 minute burst before the hour mark through shots by Aaron Clarke, Jamie Hazel, Tom Dickie and Jamie Eaves that left the visitors shell-shocked. They recovered their composure and Dan Griggs pulled one back but Berko were unable to rescue a point. The closest was a late shot from Lewis Pritchard that just cleared the bar. Mick Vipond gave a debut to James Towell from the reserves and used a couple of under 18s as substitutes. Happily there were no cards for Berko in this game.

Tasker; Gavin, Culaj, Rodrigoe, Branson, Griggs (Sedgley), Jowle(Cole). Sears, Pritchard, Thompson ,Chamberlain (Towell).

On Saturday Berko’s reserves went out of the Suburban Shield by losing 2-1 at home to Royston Town -who qualified instead. The visitors scored twice in the first half, with a shot and a powerful header, leaving an uphill task for Berko to get the point they needed to go through to the quarter final. Connor Toomey hit the post and Ben Humphrey struck the cross bar as Berko tried hard to get back in the game. Toomey did set up a grandstand finish with a goal at the canal end to reduce the deficit but despite an improved second half showing from Berko, Royston held on to the win.

Berko’s first team have a busy period ahead with three Premier division games in less than a week against good sides. On Thursday 14th they travel to Haringey Borough before two home games with Ampthill Town on Saturday and the unbeaten league leaders Dunstable Town who visit Broadwater on Tuesday 19th.

On Tuesday 12th Berko’s under 18 side are at home to AllStars Academy Black and finish their Delphian division season at home to Hemel Hempstead Town on Thursday 19th.

Berko’s reserves go to Dunstable Town on Thursday 14th in the Suburban League North.
