Berko beat 4th placed London Colney in torrential rain on Saturday at Broadwater to move up to 8th in the table. Mick Vipond gave a first start to teenager Ashley Morrissey who came through the club’s under 18 and reserve ranks and he acquitted himself well. Lawrence Bunker and Frankie Jowle were fit to return in a much changed side that lost Lewis Rodrigoe to lillness.

It was an end to end close fought game with both keeper’s producing some outstanding saves. Visiting skipper Mark Sutton came close to opening the scoring with a shot that came back off the post in the first half. Berko immediately counter attacked but Lewis Pritchard was off balance and blasted wide. Bunker got the ball in the net but was caught handling to control the ball so his shot was chalked off and he got a yellow card for his troubles. The back-pedalling Carl Tasker did really well to tip a Russell Gallagher shot onto and over the bar at the canal end. The whistle had long gone when Colney netted, so the sides went into the interval level.

Glenn Thompson came on for Pritchard on the hour mark and had a hand in the winning goal. Leading scorer Bunker got just enough of his head on the ball to beat Mark Whittamore and net from a left wing cross in the 70th minute.

Berko then had their tails up and despite a flurry of substitutions from the visitors Berko started to play the better football. Morrissey began to drive on and he had a fine shot saved by Whittamore who also stopped him and Bunker as the pressure mounted. A series of corners for Berko went unconverted. Morrissey delighted the crowd by playing three 1-2 s to get behind the London Colney defence but Whittamore just tipped the ball round the post.

Berko kept a clean sheet for only the 3rd time in their 20 league outings so far this season. They just edged the points in an entertaining game that was well refereed and it could have gone either way.

Berko conclude 2012 with a pair of big first team derby matches. On Saturday 22nd they are at home to Leverstock Green and on Saturday 29th play Aylesbury United at Leighton Town’s ground. Danny Power is now free of suspension and Lewis Rodrigoe should be fit to return and with Myles Stephenson fit again Berko are approaching full strength.
