BERKHAMSTED 2 HODDESDON TOWN 1

Berko overcame stubborn resistance from Division 1 side Hoddesdon Town in Tuesday night’s FA Cup with Budweiser  replay at Broadwater.

Both managers  shuffled their sides from the original tie. Craig Preston came in for Josh Chamberlain who was not fully fit for Berko and Segun Femiola a recent signing from AFC Wimbledon made his debut at centre back in place of Tony Moriarty. Hoddesdon dropped their centre backs and recalled veteran Ryan Redford.

The match had a goalless feel to it in the first half but the drama came near the interval. Frankie Jowle came to Berko’s rescue by kicking a ball clear on his own goal line at the canal end. They went up to the railway end and scored thanks to a spectacular 30 yard shot from Connor Calcutt, to be ahead in the tie for the first time.

After the interval the game got feisty. Lewis Rodrigoe and Redford getting booked in one incident. Tasker saved well with his foot from Redford as Hoddesdon battled for an equaliser. It came on the hour mark with a speculative bending lob from wide left by Ben Andreos.  Calcutt chould have put Berko in front when Lawrence Bunker won the ball and released him. However, the youngster lobbed over with just the keeper to beat.

Berko changed their forwards when they  brought on Lewis Pritchard and Aaron Usmani  for Jowle and Bunker. Hoddesdon substitute Pete Sawyer made Tasker pull off the save of the night, somehow getting a finger tip to deflect the ball over the bar. With 10 minute of normal time left, full back  Jamie Gavin gambled and came forward to head the winner from a left wing Calcutt cross after Steve Ashby had advanced and won the ball at the side of the area.

Matt Wardle came on as Berko went to protect the lead. Usmaniwe was booked for kicking the ball away. There was an incident involving Femiola and a Hoddesdon forward who went down but did not require treatment. Whatever happened the officials missed it and so the game resumed with a drop ball.

Berko will be at home to fellow Premier division side Hadley in the next round on Saturday 25th August.
