WELWYN GARDEN CITY 1 BERKHAMSTED 1

On Tuesday night Berko drew their final pre-season friendly. Aaron Usmani got the ball in the net twice in the first half only to be denied by offside flags. His first was a well placed header from an excellent Connor Calcutt cross early on. His second was a shot just before the interval. In between the home keeper saved from Calcutt and Usmani and the home side got one that counted beating Tasker with a shot just inside the post.

Lewis Pritchard came on at half time and twice robbed dithering defenders. Whilst the keeper saved Pritchard’s shot the first time, he had no chance with a cool lob by Calcutt for the equaliser in the 65th minute when Pritchard set him up.

There were plenty chances created in the second half. Welwyn had a goal disallowed for offside and Calcutt rattled the bar for the visitors after Charles Creasy dispossessed a defender. Mick Vipond has used the pre-season programme to look at a lot of new players and come away with a win and two draws, and the only two defeats were against teams from higher leagues.

Attention now turns to the season proper. On Saturday at 3pm Berko start it by playing Hoddesdon Town in an FA Cup with Budweiser tie. The match will take place at Waltham Abbey’s ground in Sewardstone Road, as Hoddesdon do not get use of their own ground until September. Mick Vipond expects to have Lawrence Bunker and Max Farrelly available to add to the squad that drew at Welwyn. If a replay is needed it will be on Tuesday at Broadwater. Assuming no FA Cup replays, Berko will be at home to Hillingdon Borough in their first Premier division league game of the season on Tuesday 14th kick off 7:45pm.
