Comrades v Dunstable Town

Molten Spartan South Midlands Premier

A hat trick in the first half hour from livewire striker Lee Roache gave Dunstable the points on Saturday to boost the second placed club’s hopes of catching the Premier division leaders Royston Town.

It was a case of deju vu for the Comrades as when the sides met at Creasey Park a similar spate of early goals left us an uphill task. Although the team worked hard to get back in the game a series of missed chances saw Dunstable secure the points.

After just five minutes a defender slipped on receiving a back pass and Roache pounced to open the scoring. Soon after a Nathan Frater header rattled the cross bar for the visitors. The second goal came in the thirteenth minute with Roache again too good for the defence.

Berko had the chances to get level but unfortunately Lawrence Bunker and Matt Wardle both shot over the bar at the canal end when well placed with just keeper Paul Taylor to beat. When Bunker did get the ball in the net it was chalked off for offside and he picked up a booking for arguing with the referee, as his frustration boiled over.

The third goal was an amazing solo effort from Roache, the striker worked his way down the left flank and dribbled past two defenders along the goal line before cutting back across the penalty area, past two more tackles and finishing with a crisp strike into the bottom corner.

Berko never gave up and Mick Vipond brought on Aaron Usmani and Ivailo Dimitrov in the second half as they pressed for a way back into the game. But although they enjoyed more possession throughout the second half, with Usmani and MacPherson having some success in running past the visiting defenders, the final shot or pass would not go our way.

In the end the difference between the sides was the quality of Roaches finishing and our defence will not be the last that he terrorises this season.

Squad: Farmer. Teasdale. Skinner(C). Carmichael. J. Rodrigoe. Macpherson. Smith. Hawes. Welling. Wardle. Bunker.

Subs used: Usmani. Davies. Dimitrov. not used: Gavin. Boad.
