Broxbourne v Comrades

Mon 2 Jan 2012

Molten Spartan South Midlands Premier

Berkhamsted ended their recent losing run as they won their first game of the New Year thanks to a Lawrence Bunker penalty just before the interval.

Louis Collins did get the ball in the net for the home side, when he lobbed the fit again Ed Farmer, but the whistle had gone for offside. Farmer kept out another Collins shot at the expense of a corner. Berko had to reshuffle their side after half an hour, pulling Aaron Usmani back into midfield to replace Steve Hawes who came off with a back injury. Josh Chamberlain took Usmani’s place in the forward line.

Tyler Hatherly was behind most of Berko’s good moves. He carved out a chance for Bunker, whose shot beat keeper Ed Thompson and rattled the post. The same combination produced what proved to be the winning goal. Referee Wikinson was one of the few in the ground who saw the foul when Hatherly went down. Bunker converted the spot kick, sending Thompson the wrong way.

Farmer made sure he kept a clean sheet as he pulled off a fine double save to deny Anthony Stockman’s two shots in rapid succession. Skipper Leon Skinner headed off his own line to keep out an effort from his old team mate Raff Kaphouris.

Berko had several clear chances to increase their lead, with Bunker aiming too high on a couple of occasions. One missed chance came at the end of a sublime move involving Bunker and Hatherley.

Near the end of the match there was controversy when Broxbourne director of football Tom Mundt leapt over the post and rail and entered the pitch, convincing the match officials that Josh Chamberlain had used an elbow in an aerial challenge. Chamberlain was red carded as was Louis Rose for protecting a team mate and the home keeper Ed Thompson also saw red for running half the length of the pitch to join in the handbags by pushing players.

Berko saw the game out to claim a welcome three points.

Berko: Farmer, Teasdale, Rodrigoe, Rose, Skinner, Smith, Davies (Clemo), Hawes (Chamberlain),  Bunker, Hatherly, Usmani. Subs not used: Gavin. Boad.

On Saturday Berko are at home to Colney Heath with a 3pm kick off. 23 year old attacking left sided player Ivailo Dimitrov may make his debut after signing from Aylesbury United. His previous clubs include Hendon, Maidenhead United and Kingstonian. Matt Wardle and Mark Welling may also be fit to return taking Mick Vipond’s side close to full strength. Berko have released midfielder Mitch Hamilton who has gone back to Pitstone & Ivinghoe and Jordan Toomey who is back at university.
