Oxhey Jets v Comrades

Sat 19th Nov 2011

Mick Vipond saw his side keep their second clean sheet in a week as they recorded a fine away win at Oxhey. Lawrence Bunker and Matt Wardle getting the goals. With Dunstable Town and Leverstock Green in Vase action, the Comrades moved into second place behind Royston Town.

The first half was a dour affair with both sides deprived of many players thanks to long injury lists. Ed Farmer arched his back to get up just in time to save a header from Andy Brennan in one of the few incidents of note in the opening half. He also pulled off a good double save later in the match to keep his second clean sheet of the week.

Mark Jessup in the Jets goal was a busy man throughout the second half as Berko came out in attacking mood, particularly down the wings through Frankie Jowle and Tyler Hatherly. A burst of two goals in 5 minutes around the hour mark settled the points. Matt Wardle was first to react when Jessop stopped a shot and the ball ran loose so he tucked away the chance to open the scoring. A looping header from top scorer Lawrence Bunker followed soon after, to take his personal tally to 8 goals in 7 days. Berko could have increased their lead but Jessup kept the score down with some fine saves.

It was a good day all round for Berko, in a well refereed match in which they did not collect a booking . Two wins in a week has seen  Berko jump up from 8th to second but they will have to go some to catch the leaders Royston Town who are now 10 points clear-but there are 25 more games to go!

Berko: Farmer, Toomey , Rodrigoe  J. Carmichael, Rose, Davies (Chamberlain), Wardle , Hawes, Bunker, Hatherly,  Jowle. Subs. not  used: Gavin and Hamilton .

The Reserves also continued their good recent form  with a 4 v 1 win at Broadwater against Evergreen in the Herts Intermediate Cup. Report on Reserves home page.
