Comrades v Haringey Chall Trophy

Tues 8th Nov 2011

BERKHAMSTED 2 v 6 HARINGEY BOROUGH

Berko’s rearranged side crashed out of the Challenge Trophy in midweek. Despite taking an early lead when a Tyler Hatherley cross was delicately flicked into the net by Matt Wardle, Chris Benjamin struck twice in three minutes to equalise and then put Borough ahead after just 17 minutes. Each time reacting faster than the defenders to shoot past Ed Farmer. They almost scored again with a shot that hit the cross bar shortly before the half time interval.

In the second half Guy Koffi made it 3-1 and Benjamin beat about four men to net an amazing hat trick. Farmer appeared to be fouled when he went up with a forward but the referee saw it differently and the ball escaped his grasp and ran down and struck his leg before rebounding over the goal line for the 5th goal.

A double substitution from Mick Vipond was rewarded with a consolation goal from Mick O’Farrell who came on and netted after a Hatherly free kick was not cleared. Hatherly beat several men on a mazy run but his shot went across the face of the goal as Berko sparked into life after their second goal. Visisting substitute Anthony Christian got a last minute sixth goal to complete a miserable night for the Broadwater faithful.

Borough will be away to Hadley or Biggleswade United in the next round.

Berko: Farmer, Gavin, Rodrigoe, J. Carmichael, Boad(Hamilton), Hawes,Wardle , Davies, Bunker, Hatherly, Chamberlain(O’Farrell). Subs not  used: S. Carmichael

On Saturday Berko go to St. Margaretsbury for a league game and Mick Vipond will have Louis Rose and Frankie Jowle available again after being cup-tied in midweek. Adam Mead should return too and maybe Simon Carmichael will be fully recovered after injury. However, Aaron Usmani and Mark Welling remain on the injured list. On Tuesday evening 15th Berko are at home to Hertford Town in another league game, the Comrades will be keen to avenge a defeat from earlier in the season.

After securing a point in a pulsating 3 v 3 draw, away at table toppers Barton Rovers on Wednesday evening, Berko’s Reserve side are at home to Hartley Wintney on Saturday in the Suburban League North k.o. 3pm.
