BERKHAMSTED  2 v 0 STOTFOLD

Berkhamsted notched their first home league win since August, with Mick Vipond pleased to be able to pick from a full strength squad for the first time in ages, changing both full backs as Jordan Toomey was back from University and Lewis Rodrigoe fit again. The two sides began the match next to each other in mid-table but Berko’s win moved them three points clear and the other results left Stotfold four places behind them.

Tyler Hatherly was behind many of Berko’s best moves. An inviting cross of his from the wing went inches past Lawrence Bunker and Tony Burnett arrived at the back post just too late to convert the chance. However, it was a warning of things to come as Berko sealed the points with a two goal burst midway through the first half. Hatherly dribbled in from the left wing and his cross was converted by Lawrence Bunker for his first goal since returning after suspension. Visiting goalkeeper Brad Gillham got plenty of hand on a long shot from Hatherly but the ball eluded his grasp and went in making it 2-0 a quarter of the way through the game.

In the second half Tom Peverall burst through for the visitors but Ed Farmer saved his shot. Bunker headed over at the railway end from a Mark Welling free kick as the home side had the chances to wrap the game up.

Berko felt confident enough to take off Bunker and Tony Burnett. One of the replacements Josh Chamberlain shot across the goal after being played in by an intelligent pass from Matt Wardle. Aaron Usmani also came on for his first appearance since getting injured a month ago.

Stofold had a lot of possession in the second half but seemed intent on trying to walk the ball in, so Farmer hardly had a real shot to save. There were a couple of yellow cards for Hatherly and Wardle late in the game.

In the run up to the match, Stotfold’s assistant manager Gordon Biggerstaff left, so Steve Young was in sole charge, but the result was the same as before in the FA Vase, when Berko again kept a clean sheet and won.

Berko: Farmer, Toomey, Rodrigoe,  J. Carmichael ,S. Carmichael, Welling, Hatherly, Hawes, Bunker, (Chamberlain), Burnett (Usmani), Wardle. Subs. not used: Gavin, Clark and Mead.
