UPDATE AND REPORT

AFC DUNSTABLE 3 BERKHAMSTED 0

(match abandoned with 2 minutes left due to floodlight failure)

For the second time this season a floodlight failure meant a match between these two teams was not completed. Six months ago the teams met at under 18 level and with almost half an hour left and Berko leading 2-0 the game was abandoned due to the Creasey Park floodlights not working.

Ironically that game is now rescheduled for Thursday 10th March.

This time the two first teams got closer to a result when the lights went out with just 2 minutes left. The home side claim it was because the generator in use powering the lights at their shared ground that is being rebuilt, ran out of diesel. They obtained more diesel and the lights three times flickered on only to go out again within seconds so the referee finally gave up trying to restart the game at five past 10 in the evening.

The league management committee will have to decide whether to award the game to one of the two sides or to order a replay that both clubs could do without, due to fixture congestion. The eventual “winners” will play St. Albans City Reserves in the final of the division 1 Cup.

Injuries and work commitments ruled out Tony Burnett, Chris Colman, Adam Mead and Jim Carmichael. The disrupted side struggled in the first half. They got their noses in front in the 14th minute when Berko lost possession cheaply and Hayden Wills scampered up the right wing and crossed for Dan Liddon to head home. Ed Farmer got his fingertips to the ball but it still flew into the top corner of the net.

Aaron Usmani, who had a quiet game back after an injury lay off lasting 6 weeks came closest for Berko with a shot at the back post that keeper Lewis Bowley saved with his legs. Dunstable twice hit the bar, the second time from a free kick just before the interval. At half time Steve Hawes came off injured and was replaced by Chris Mason as Berko switched to 4-4-2 and gave an improved second half performace but were still losing the ball too often.

Injuries forced Simon Carmichael and Danny Power off, being replaced by Jamie Gavin and Lee Groves.  BJ Christie scored two goals in the last 10 minutes played. His first was a low shot from far out that beat Farmer en route to the far side of the net. His second was due to persistence as he ran through the defence and although Farmer saved his first shot he netted with the follow up.
