Chairman Steve Davis got proceedings underway as he thanked all the teams of players and all the Staff who work so hard to provide football at Broadwater.

The players voted left back Lewis Rodrigoe as their player of the year in his first season in the Premier Division, where the club finished 7^th.

The Comrades Supporters Association provided the shield for the fans player of the season and Matt Wardle was the first recipient, Matty also received the First Team Golden Boot award.

The new season is not far away with the Broadwater pitch being reseeded today and training starts on Tuesday 3^rd July. New players are welcome. The first competitive match will be on Saturday 28^th July when Berkhamsted entertain Harpenden Town in the Herts Charity Shield.

COLNEY HEATH 1 v 3 BERKHAMSTED

The Comrades ended the season on a high with their fifth consecutive win.

The latest victory ensured they overtook their opponents Colney Heath to finish 7th in the final league table in their first season in the Premier division.

Right back Jamie Gavin, who was recalled for the suspended Danny Power, put us in front on 12 minutes when his downward header, from a Josh Chamberlain cross, beat the keeper.

Jack Coombs equalised after half an hour for the home side. Ed Farmer kept Berko in the game with a great save from a header.

Ill discipline has cost Heath dear this season and they had four men suspended for this game. They were down to ten men again, when a player got his second booking of the game, yet they  still came close to taking the lead just before the interval.

Ed Farmer was booked and conceeded a penalty,  but he then saved, the normally prolific, Ian Cooper’s spot kick.

Josh Chamberlain put us back in front and Jordan Frederick  made it 3-1 to make the points safe.  Heath then went down to nine men thanks to another double yellow card and so we went on to win comfortably.

BERKHAMSTED 3 v 1 BIGGLESWADE UTD

Berko’s resurgent end of season form continued on Saturday as they notched their fourth consecutive win, comfortably beating Biggleswade United.

They got off to a great start, opening the scoring with a fine goal in the 11th minute. Matt Wardle and Connor Calcutt exchanged passes on the left hand side and the ball was switched to overlapping right back Danny Power whose fine cross was slotted home by teenager Josh Chamberlain.

Scott Waters saved from another teenager Calcutt after he had beaten three men. Power was causing problems down the right, beating men and knocking over inviting crosses at the canal end that were not converted.

Meanwhile at the railway end Sean Murray’s snap shot from 25 yards caused a brief scare but the Berko defence were generally on top in the first half.

Midway through the game Berko had to replace the injured duo of Lewis Rodrigoe (dead leg) and Connor Calcutt (bruised ankle).

There was a flurry of goals at the start of the second half with Courtney Francis, for the second week running, coming off the bench to score. His first header was blocked, but he reacted to shoot home the loose ball. However, United soon hit back when Ade Yussuf getting a soft goal to make it 2-1.

Just after the hour mark, Chamberlain grabbed his second goal of the game, waiting at the left hand post for the ball to drop to him and volleying past Waters.

Berko thought they had a 4th goal but it was chalked off as Simon Carmichael was deemed offside when he headed the ball back to brother Jim, who volleyed home with style.

A 20 yard shot from Mark Welling dipped but went just over the bar at the railway end so there were no more goals to celebrate in the closing stages.

Berko’s reserve side had a massive 5-1 win at Hartley Wintney in the Suburban League North on Saturday. Leading scorer Rowan Taylor again led the way with a pair of goals and Adam Balletta, Chris Chance and Karl Lewis also netted in the second half.

Saturday marks the end of Berkhamsted’s football season. They go to Colney Heath, knowing that a win would take them above their hosts to earn a creditable 7th spot in the final league table in our first season in the Premier division.

Right back Danny Power misses the game starting a suspension but otherwise Mick Vipond should have the whole squad to pick from, assuming Lewis Rodrigoe and Connor Calcutt recover from their knocks.

The reserve side play their final league game on Saturday when they go to Hanworth Villa.

LONDON TIGERS 0 v 4 BERKHAMSTED

Berko notched their third win in eight days and were much the better side on a bumpy pitch in Kingsbury on Saturday.

Matt Wardle had an early effort chalked off, as he was offside after latching on to a Connor Calcutt pass.

Midway through the first half Berko took the lead with a cracking goal. Lewis Rodrigoe won the ball and controlled it well and Calcutt’s left wing cross came out to Josh Smith who crossed for Wardle to hang in the air and powerfully head home.

Tigers stopper, Joseph Woodley produced two fine acrobatic saves in a minute to stop Berko going further in front. First he put a Steve Hawes 20 yard drive round the post and then from the resulting corner by Josh Chamberlain he tipped a strong header from skipper Simon Carmichael over the bar.

A Calcutt shot was blocked by a hand but the penatly appeal was turned down so Berko went in at the interval only one goal up.

A Calcutt shot rattled the bar early in the second half and the second goal was not long coming as Chamberlain sprayed the ball out to the overlapping Lewis Rodrigoe and his cross was nodded home by Calcutt.

Chamberlain was next to beat Woodley but his shot rebounded to safety after striking the post.

Calcutt then beat three men before setting up Wardle who got his second goal of the game with a low shot to make it 3-0.

The home side were never in any rush to clear their lines and inevitably it cost them a goal when Marcus Lansiquot was caught in possession by substitute Courtney Francis who fired home.

Ed Farmer had only one real shot to save all afternoon when substitute Aderito Manuel hit a snap shot. Woodley prevented a fifth goal when he tipped a Francis shot round the post near the end of the game.

BOREHAM WOOD 1 v 0 BERKHAMSTED

The Youth Team produced another fine performance in their last match of the season and the Club is rightly proud of this group of players who gave the academy side from Boreham Wood a stiff test in an enthralling game.

To put the game in context, Wood have all but won this League, defeated Kings Langley 8-0 in the Challenge Cup semi-final last week and are also in the Final of the League Champions Cup as well as reaching the 1st round proper of the FA Youth Cup.

Joe set his side up to play a disciplined containing game in the first half and the lads followed his instructions to the letter. Wood of course had chances, hitting the woodwork twice, but after thirty minutes we had settled into a good rythm and started to play a bit ourselves, with Courtney Hart working hard up front to try and use his pace to unsettle Woods tight defence.

Just when it looked as though we would reach half time on level terms a tame shot from twenty yards slipped through our keepers hands to give the home side the lead.

A change of formation and personnel in the second half  gave our hard working midfield more chance to progress as we added a second striker. Wood started the second half on the attack  and Tom Calverly was called into action to make two smart stops.  Wood kept coming and Calverly made a superb save from point blank range to keep us in the game. Another attack saw us clear the ball of the line as we defended resolutely.

Again, we settled into a good period of play, keeping possession well and working hard to support our front players. Cooner Toomey had our best chance to equalise as we worked the ball across the pitch and released him onto the edge of the box, but his shot was well saved. The resulting corner caused problems, but a bouncing ball was hooked wide at the far post.

In the last fifteen minutes we looked the team most likely to score, with Jordan Aikman and Chris Chance threatening. But Woods defence, that has only conceded eight goals in the league, held firm.

A fast paced, exciting encounter came to an end with Berko still enjoying good possession, but unable to find the goal their performance deserved.

So, the end of another season and we say goodbye to the lads that are off to University and College, but the future looks bright for next season and congratulations to Joe and Biff on their seasons work.

Many of the remaining players will be involved in the Reserves Friendly at St Margaretsbury next Wednesday as Paul looks to incorporate this seasons up and coming youngsters into next seasons Suburban squad.

HOLMER GREEN 0 v 3 BERKHAMSTED

We consolidated our league position by winning this replayed game at Holmer Green.

Despite missing half a dozen regulars the side produced a solid performance as we completed our second victory in four days.

We began brightly, with teenagers Connnor Calcutt (twice) and Josh Chamberlain breaking through with just Sam Bunting to beat, but he saved two and the other shot went wide.

Calcutt might have shot but unselfishly passed to Jon Davies who shot tamely at Bunting in our next chance and it turned into a frustrating half against a team just above the relegation zone. Indeed, the Green side had shouts for a penalty turned down before the interval.

The turning point of the game was in the 56^th minute when Courtney Francis was tripped just outside the penalty area by last man Gary Pape, who got a red card for his efforts. A short free kick by Chamberlain was crossed by Josh Smith and Dale Sears headed it back across goal and inside the post, but his effort was disallowed for offside.

Scott McPherson, promoted from the Reserves came on for Franics and his incisive passing helped settle the match.

He combined with Danny Power and split the Holmer defence with a pass that released Calcutt, whose cross from the right wing was turned into his own net by Green’s Steve Nott-Macaire.

The persistent fouling on Josh Smith ended with a second yellow for Gary Lines, meaning Berko had to play against nine men for the rest of the game.

In the last minute of normal time Mcpherson sprayed the ball out to Lewis Rodrigoe who crossed from the left wing for Chamberlain to make it 2-0. Chamberlain scored again in injury time with a free kick, that possibly brushed Josh Smith’s hair on its way to bounce in at the far post, to confirm the points.

Those that were concerned that the decision to replay the previously abandoned game might have given Green an advantage over relegation rivals Hatfield and Hanwell, need not have worried.

The win moves us to within five points of seventh placed Colney Heath, who we still have to play in one of our remaining three games.

On Saturday Berko go to Kingsbury to play London Tigers, hoping to notch their fifth double of the season. Apart from Aaron Usmani, Mick Vipond should have a full squad to select from with the Carmichael brothers, Matt Wardle and Mark Welling all available again and Frankie Jowle should be over his bout of sickness.

Berko’s Reserve side travel to AFC Hayes in the Suburban League North on Saturday. The under 18 side conclude their league season with a trip to Boreham Wood on Thursday 12^th.

BERKHAMSTED 3 v 1 LEVERSTOCK GREEN

Berko’s first home win since November meant we moved above our opponents Leverstock Green and into 8th place, as Stotfold lost at Tring Athletic.

In front of a good derby day holiday crowd, we completed a fairly comfortable league double, with all our goals coming from ex Green players, as in the away fixture.

Ben Butler, who used to play in the Southern League for the old Berkhamsted Town club, forced Ed Farmer to make an early save when his shot was tipped past the post.

Matt Wardle was the danger man at the canal end and he broke free but his shot was safely gathered into the arms of Gareth Tinsley.

The next time Wardle got clear he gave the Comrades the lead with a left foot shot. However, the visitors were soon level when a free kick by James Bent sailed into the top of the goal from out on the left wing.

Tinsley held a second half shot from Jordan Fredrick after neat work by Wardle and Connor Calcutt. Berko got back in front when Fredrick found Calcutt on the wing and from his cross Wardle helped himself to the second goal, just getting the ball past Tinsley before the two players collided.

Calcutt beat two men and his shot was hit hard but just too high at the railway end. Within minutes of coming on for skipper Dale Sears, Frankie Jowle went down under a challenge from Louis West and took the penalty himself to make it 3-1 and ensure the points came to Berko.

Teenage substitute Josh Chamberlain twice went close for Berko, putting one effort past the post and beating Tinsley with another shot when he was played in by Wardle, but a defender was on hand to clear off the line.
